RwandAir Cargo launches new services to Dubai and Djibouti, expanding its network and supporting trade between Africa, the UAE, and Djibouti.

RwandAir Cargo, the freight division of RwandAir (site), is launching new routes to Dubai and Djibouti, significantly enhancing its cargo network and connectivity across Africa and the Middle East. This expansion is part of RwandAir’s strategic effort to support economic growth through improved air freight services.

New routes to Dubai and Djibouti

RwandAir Cargo will operate the new routes using its dedicated freighter, the B738SF. This expansion increases the airline’s cargo destinations to seven, strengthening its presence in the region. The addition of Dubai World Central Airport marks RwandAir’s second cargo destination in the UAE, following Sharjah.

    Enhancing trade opportunities

Yvonne Makolo, CEO of RwandAir, emphasized the importance of these new routes in fostering business connections and enhancing trade opportunities. “The added destinations will support efficient and reliable connections for business and provide significant opportunities for enhanced trade between Rwanda, the UAE, Djibouti, and the rest of the continent,” Makolo stated. She highlighted Rwanda’s strategic geographic location, which allows the airline to serve as a vital link within Africa and beyond.

We are thrilled to introduce our new freight services to Dubai World Central (DWC).

    Strategic importance of air freight

As a landlocked nation, Rwanda relies heavily on air freight for its economic growth. The new routes will play a crucial role in facilitating the transportation of essential goods such as fresh produce and medical supplies. The first flight to Dubai World Central Airport departed from Kigali on June 10, 2024, marking a significant milestone in RwandAir Cargo’s expansion efforts.

    Supporting regional trade goals

Bosco Gakwaya, Director of RwandAir Cargo Services, commented on the strategic importance of the new routes. “Our expansion to Dubai and Djibouti strengthens RwandAir Cargo’s role as a key trade facilitator on the African continent. It aligns well with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), transforming Kigali into a regional cargo hub.”

The new services to Djibouti will begin on June 17, 2024, with flights operating twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. This expansion not only enhances RwandAir’s connectivity but also supports the broader goals of regional trade integration and economic development.
