The African continent is witnessing an unprecedented surge in air cargo demand, a trend that’s redefining the global logistics landscape.

According to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for February 2024, African airlines have experienced a remarkable 22.0% year-on-year growth in air cargo demand, positioning the region at the forefront of the air freight industry.

“February’s demand growth of 11.9% far outpaced the 0.9% expansion in cross-border trade. This strong start for 2024 could see demand surpass the exceptionally high levels of early 2022. It also shows air cargo’s strong resilience in the face of continuing political and economic uncertainties,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s director general.

Soaring demand: Africa leads global air cargo growth

This remarkable growth in African cargo is not just a temporary spike but a sign of the continent’s growing importance in the global trade network. In February 2024 alone, African carriers outperformed their global counterparts, with a year-on-year demand growth of 22.0%, the strongest among all regions. This is a clear indication of the continent’s increasing role in both regional and international trade.

The drivers behind Africa’s air cargo boom

Several factors contribute to this surge in air freight demand in Africa. The intra-Africa trade lane, in particular, has shown a staggering 42.3% year-on-year growth. This growth is fueled by the continent’s expanding economy, increased foreign investment, and the gradual integration of regional markets. Moreover, the capacity increase of 28.2% year-on-year demonstrates a proactive response from the air cargo industry to meet this growing demand.

    Global context

In comparison, other regions have shown varied performances. The Asia-Pacific region experienced a notable slowdown post-Lunar New Year celebrations, with an 11.9% growth in demand. North American carriers recorded the weakest growth at 4.2%, and European carriers saw a 14.6% rise in demand. Middle Eastern carriers also reported robust growth at 20.9%, while Latin American carriers experienced a 13.7% increase.

The future of African air cargo?

The African demand for air cargo reflects the continent’s resilience amid political and economic uncertainties and its potential as a future logistics hub. With continued investment and focus on improving infrastructure and regulatory frameworks, Africa is poised to play an increasingly vital role in global air freight.

Investments in African air cargo infrastructure, embracing technology for more efficient operations, and fostering intra-continental trade relationships will be essential steps to capitalize on this growing market.
