The London Metal Exchange announces plans to establish a copper and zinc delivery point in Jeddah, amplifying Saudi Arabia’s prominence in the global alloy industry.

    Setting the Stage for Growth
In a strategic move aimed at strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position in the global alloy market, the London Metal Exchange (LME) is poised to establish a new warehouse in Jeddah. The initiative underscores the Kingdom’s rising influence in the international metals arena and marks a significant milestone in its industrial and logistical development.

In consultation with stakeholders, the LME is refining its warehouse location framework to address critical aspects such as depot operator insolvency, ensuring uninterrupted access to metal assets. Pending policy adjustments post-consultation, Jeddah’s designation as a delivery point will signify a new era of industrial and logistical advancement for the city and the Kingdom.

Jeddah will activate as a delivery point after the approval of the initial warehouse company, further solidifying its role as a key player in the global metals trade. LME CEO Matthew Chamberlain said, “Saudi Arabia is an increasingly important global metals hub, and Jeddah fully meets with the operational and logistical criteria for new warehouse locations — such as being an important area of net consumption and having an effective transport network.”

    Partnership for Progress
The LME’s decision to use Jeddah as a delivery point for copper and zinc has garnered enthusiastic support from industry leaders like Farooq Shaikh, CEO of LogiPoint. This collaboration not only reflects the success of Saudi Arabia’s National Industrial Development and Logistics Program but also paves the way for enhanced cooperation with the international metals community. Speaking of the agreement, Shaikh said, “We very much welcome the LME intention to list Jeddah as a new LME Delivery Point for copper and zinc, and we are very pleased that the Jeddah Islamic Port and the Bonded Re-Export Zone meets the LME’s exacting standards,” Shaikh said.

“We look forward to a long future of cooperation with LME and to further developing our relationships with the international metals community to make Jeddah and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a major metals logistics hub servicing the Middle East, North and East Africa regions,” he added.

    From Vision to Reality
Aligned with Saudi Arabia’s vision to emerge as a global industrial powerhouse, the establishment of a copper and zinc delivery point in Jeddah signifies a crucial step towards realizing the Kingdom’s aspirations. By leveraging its strategic location and robust infrastructure, Jeddah is poised to become a pivotal hub servicing the Middle East, North, and East Africa regions.

A cornerstone of the global metals market since 1877, the London Metal Exchange continues to facilitate trade, handling billions in transactions annually. With Jeddah’s inclusion as a delivery point, the LME underscores its commitment to fostering growth and innovation in the alloy industry, further solidifying its position as a leading international trading platform.
