Comprehensive soil and rock testing completed, laying the groundwork for final feasibility study.

Sovereign Metals (site) has completed a pivotal phase in its Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) at the Kasiya rutile‑graphite project in Malawi. The study was undertaken by ARQ Geotech. The extensive geotechnical campaign advances the company’s strategic timeline as it develops its infrastructure and engineering plans.

    In‑field geotechnical program completed

Over 400 geotechnical investigations were conducted across the site and the data will be used to inform engineering and infrastructure decisions. Key areas studied included mining areas, processing plant sites, tailings storage facilities (TSF), and the raw water dam using a variety of techniques.

Sovereign’s CEO and managing director Frank Eagar commented: “Completing these comprehensive infield geotechnical programs marks another significant milestone towards the completion of our DFS and another step in our systematic approach towards the development of Kasiya.”

Positive soil and rock profiles support design

Early findings reveal favourable subsurface conditions with consistent stratigraphy—from topsoil to hard rock—across foundations and earthworks zones. Crucially, ferricrete within transported horizons could be repurposed as engineered infill material, offering potential to reduce construction costs.

    Engineering design benefits ahead

Geotechnical data will be integrated into DFS engineering, guiding foundation design, slope stability, earthworks, and infrastructure placement. Standardised foundation schemes enabled by this data may simplify design and trim complexity—supporting cost efficiency.

    DFS schedule and strategic partnership

Completion of the geotechnical program reinforces the company’s commitment to delivering the DFS in Q4 2025. Rio Tinto continues as strategic partner—with $60 million invested and direct technical input via a Sovereign‑Rio Tinto committee. Once the DFS is released, Rio Tinto has up to 180 days to assume operator status and exclusive marketing rights for 40 % of annual production.

As Sovereign Metals advances toward its year‑end DFS, investors eyeing Africa’s critical minerals space should track forthcoming design updates and DFS outcomes as leading indicators of project momentum.
