South African mining specialist debuts in the Sultanate amid a climate of growing business interests and cooperation between the two nations
DRA, a South African engineering group focused on the mining industry, has opened an office in Oman and committed itself to the development of the sector in the Sultanate.
Established in 1984, DRA employs 3,000 staff, including 1,300 engineers, delivering mining, minerals processing and infrastructure EPC projects, as well as operations and maintenance services. “Bilateral trade is growing but we would like it to grow further,” he said.

Ahmed Al Maimani, undersecretary for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, expressed equal hope that the partnership would yield results for the economy of both countries.
Paul Thomson, chief executive officer of DRA Group Holdings noted that the company belief in ‘upskilling’ the local workforce would be a particular benefit in the relationship with Oman.
Ambassador Pepani added that South Africa had a lot to offer to Omani companies in various spheres and the potential to expand Omani interests across in the continent.

The deal accompanies the disclosure of an agreement between Oman and South Africa for the latter’s central flying school to train Omani recruits for the period of one year — a relationship set against a history of bilateral collaboration in the aviation sector.
An agro-processing plant project between South Africa and Oman in Sohar is another example of the growing ties between the two countries.
