Elsewedy Electric, the multinational Egyptian firm, in collaboration with Deutsche Bahn International Operations, has been awarded a contract to operate Egypt’s groundbreaking high-speed rail network, potentially positioning Egypt as a key player in African rail infrastructure.

    Egypt’s high-speed rail initiative

Egypt is poised to join Morocco as African countries with high-speed rail infrastructure as it embarks on a transformative journey to modernize its transportation network. The Egyptian government has officially awarded a 15-year operating contract to Elswedy Electric and German company Deutsche Bahn International Operations (DB E.C.O) to manage Egypt’s first high-speed rail project.

The contract was recently signed in the presence of Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir, German Ambassador Frank Hartmann and Elsewedy Electric CEO Ahmed El Sewedy.

Elsewedy Electric and DB E.C.O’s partnership

The selection of German expertise through DB E.C.O underscores Egypt’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology and skilled labor from Europe. This strategic partnership signifies a significant step towards Egypt’s aspiration to become a hub for cutting-edge rail technology in the region.

    Expansion and impact

The high-speed rail network, often referred to as “the Suez Canal on rails,” will connect Cairo, the New Administrative Capital (NAC), and Alexandria, catering to an estimated 30 million passengers by 2025. The project also includes plans for two additional lines and 60 stations, extending from Abu Simbel and Luxor to the Red Sea port of Hurghada, significantly improving connectivity and accessibility for 90% of the Egyptian population, according to Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT).

    Operational responsibilities

With a total investment of USD 23 billion, Elswedy and DB E.C.O will oversee the technical management and maintenance of the rail installations, ensuring the reliability and safety of the network. Their responsibilities include track maintenance, supply chain management, and accident prevention measures.

    Investment in sustainable transport

In parallel, Egypt continues to invest in sustainable public transport solutions to address congestion and environmental concerns in densely populated cities like Cairo. Projects such as Cairo’s fourth metro line, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), underscore Egypt’s commitment to creating efficient, eco-friendly transportation options for its citizens.

Through strategic partnerships and bold initiatives, Egypt is forging ahead in its quest for modernization and sustainable development, with Elswedy at the forefront of pioneering rail infrastructure solutions.
