UN-Habitat and Denmark work to enhance cross-border trade in Kenya’s Busia district, aiming for regional economic growth and stability.

UN-Habitat, in collaboration with the Danish government, is advancing efforts to bolster cross-border regional trade within East Africa, with the Kenya’s Busia district standing as a key focal point. This initiative is designed to promote economic development, improve living standards, and foster stability across border communities.

    The Strategic Importance of Busia

Located on the boundary between Kenya and Uganda, the Busia district plays a crucial role in regional commerce due to its status as a major trade corridor. Enhancing the infrastructure and operational efficiencies of this district is vital for strengthening cross-border trade, a goal that aligns with the larger vision for sustainable economic growth in East Africa.

“I am glad that the government of Denmark has agreed to support this cross-border project, courtesy of UN-Habitat efforts. The municipalities of Busia and Malaba face serious infrastructural deficiencies that this project will assist to address,” said Dr. Paul Otuoma, Governor of Busia County. “We have proposed development of infrastructure such as markets, special zones for traders, development of ICT-based repository and training of traders and harmonization of policies between the County Government of Busia and local government on Ugandan side as the measures that will enhance seamless trade in the region.”

    UN-Habitat and Denmark’s Joint Efforts

During a recent briefing, UN-Habitat underscored the importance of coordinated efforts to build capacities that facilitate smoother trade processes. In the context of these endeavors, Anne Petersen, Danish Ambassador to Kenya, affirmed: “The project will not only focus on trade facilitation but also on creating decent work opportunities, especially for women and youth, and ensuring sustainable urban development. Our commitment in actualization of this program as part of our strategic plan on cooperation with African countries that was launched this year with key focus on trade is unwavered.”

This strategic intervention is seen as a comprehensive approach aimed at supporting the border’s economic activities, which have significant ripple effects on regional economies. Such measures are anticipated to bring long-term benefits by enhancing market accessibility and reducing logistical bottlenecks.

    Empowering Women and Youth

One of the standout elements of this initiative is its dedication to empowering women and youth. Ishaku Maitumbi, Head of Sub-Regional Programme (East and Horn of Africa), UN-Habitat, said, “This caucus aims at trying to shape this metropolitan area in a bid to foster the landscape of economic activities by addressing pertinent issues that hinder seamless trade, by incorporating strategic plan that is inclusive for all.” The empowerment strategy includes tailored programs that enable youth and women to participate actively in trade and development projects, contributing to equitable economic growth.

Sustainable Development as a Core Objective

UN-Habitat has woven sustainability into the fabric of this initiative, ensuring that the outcomes will support the long-term needs of the Busia district and its surrounding areas. This sentiment reflects a vision where infrastructure investments do more than just facilitate commerce; they uplift entire communities and build resilience against future economic challenges.

The combined efforts of UN-Habitat and the Danish government in the Busia district mark a pivotal step toward enhanced trade and regional stability. With targeted initiatives that promote economic growth, empower underrepresented groups, and prioritize sustainability, this partnership aims to create a stronger, more connected East African region.
