Wetility raises $27.8M to scale solar power in South Africa, aiming to bring energy access to thousands and reduce dependence on the national grid.

South Africa’s Wetility Raises $27.8M to Power the Future with Solar

South African energy startup Wetility (site) has secured ZAR500 million (US$27.8 million) in a structured capital partnership with Jaltech, a leading funder of solar energy projects. The capital will be used to accelerate the rollout of its solar subscription model, which delivers clean, affordable, and consistent electricity to thousands of South African households.

The raise marks a pivotal step in Wetility’s expansion as the country continues to grapple with chronic power shortages and the need for scalable alternative energy solutions. The capital provided by Jaltech will be used to fund solar and battery systems, enabling Wetility to add over 16 MW of solar capacity to the national distributed energy footprint, as well as avoid over 250,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions.

A Scalable Model for Solar Adoption

Wetility offers a tech-driven, modular solar energy system with flexible financing and subscription options, allowing households to reduce or eliminate reliance on the embattled national grid.

The startup currently serves households and small businesses, offering tailored solutions to meet varying levels of energy demand. The new funding will allow Wetility to scale its footprint dramatically, with a focus on inclusive energy access.

Strong Investor Backing and Strategic Vision

The company’s CFO, Dawid Swart, emphasized the strategic importance of this funding round in pushing forward Wetility’s mission. “This funding unlocks the next phase of our growth, empowering thousands of homeowners and SMEs who want more predictability, control, and savings in the face of a volatile energy landscape. It’s a strong endorsement of our model and mission, and we’re proud to partner with Jaltech, which shares our long-term vision. Together, we’re driving scalable, inclusive access to clean energy, one roof at a time,” said Swart.

    Building Confidence in Cleantech’s Future

For investors like Jaltech, Wetility represents the kind of high-impact business model that addresses both economic opportunity and climate resilience.

“Over the years, Jaltech has assisted Wetility with portions of its growth plans, but we are now ready to stand firmly behind them and back their mission to deliver reliable energy to thousands of homes,” said Derrick Hyde, co-founder and partner at Jaltech.

A Bright Future for African Energy Access

Wetility’s funding announcement arrives at a time when African governments and private sectors are increasingly exploring alternatives to centralized power infrastructure. By offering solar-as-a-service, Wetility is positioning itself as a key enabler in bridging South Africa’s energy gap—one household at a time.

With ambitious expansion plans and solid investor confidence, Wetility is not just building solar systems—it is building a more resilient, equitable energy future.
